Hi, Below you will find two suggestions of events to be realized at the Barbican.
They are called Rock in São Paulo (I) and Rock in São Paulo (II).
Rock in São Paulo (I) is a less pretentions project proposing 4 bands from São Paulo: Pedra, Baranga, Tomada and Carro Bomba. The bands I am suggesting you, all have more than 10 years "on the road" and thru local independent labels released many albums. They only sing in Portuguese, and some of then play a kind of 70's indie rock with some psychedelic bits here and there, sometimes mixed with Brazilian contemporary music. These musicians are the "cream" of Brazilian rock and their shows are very vibrant.
Rock in São Paulo (II) is a comprehensive festival trying to show musically what is going on at the biggest city of South America.

Note: In parallel, we could have a photographic exposition about São Paulo plus a mini Bienal of arts and a CD and merchandize sale.

The state of São Paulo has many others attractions: The coastline between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is considered one of the most beautiful in the world; the town of Brotas is a magnet for rafters and extreme sport enthusiasts; the national park of Alto do Ribeira, close to Eldorado, has one of the largest collection of caves in Brazil; while the city of Barretos holds the country’s largest rodeo which attracts cowboys from around of the world, including US. Other highlights include the cities of Campinas, Campos de Jordão and Ribeirão Preto. |

Re. Rock in São Paulo Festival
Dear Madam Brooks
Firstly I would like to congratulate The Barbican for the excellent projects it have been doing all over the years, especially the ones related to Brazilian music.
Please, Let me to introduce myself, I am a Brazilian rock producer who settled in England back in 1987. I am 61 years old and although I have been living in London for a long time, I never lost contact with the Brazilian rock bands.
I am the responsible for a very successful website (nearly 1 million visitors) called Barbieri - Memórias do Rock Brasileiro (Barbieri - Memories of Brazilian Rock). My work with Brazilian bands spanned over 40 years and includes rock bands in all kinds of stiles, from Mutantes to Sepultura with hundreds of other groups and styles in between. Back in 1992 I produced a concert with a Brazilian band at the legendary The Marquee Club and recently I had been involved with the international tour of Vulcano another band from São Paulo. Even today, as you can see by this letter, I am still trying to help Brazilian bands in many different ways.
I noticed that many of the events Barbican organized, involving Brazilians, were centred almost only on the old and already established Brazilian acts or in artists from Rio de Janeiro and north of Brazil.
São Paulo is a massive city, considered by many people the biggest of South America, a real metropolis with a powerful underground scene and never had in London a show catering for her rock talents. São Paulo has hundreds and hundreds of rock bands playing almost in any style you can imagine.
So, I am taking the liberty to, humbly, suggest a project involving some Brazilian bands from São Paulo in a style that could fit with The Barbican: Pedra, Baranga, Tomada and Carro Bomba.
The bands I am suggesting you, all have more than 10 years "on the road" and thru local independent labels released many albums. They only sing in Portuguese, and some of then play a kind of 70's indie rock with some psychedelic bits here and there, sometimes mixed with Brazilian contemporary music. These musicians are the "cream" of Brazilian rock and their shows are very vibrant.
I prepared an Internet page especially for you to be able to listen some tracks from the bands latest albums.
São Paulo city do not have nearby beaches like Rio de Janeiro and, like London the nearest beach is about 60 kilometres away. As São Paulo is an over populated city with all the problems that came with it, the Rock from São Paulo often reflects the mood of his people. As Rio de Janeiro not only grabbed most of the tourists but it also house most of the central TV stations and the international record companies offices, very often the importance of São Paulo in music was and still is neglected by the Brazilian media. A simple example is the Rock in Rio. It never reflected the underground. As I am always on the side of the underdog musician, my wish is to try to correct this error, also opening a line of contact to keep bringing the real underground music that is actually playing not only in São Paulo but also all over Brazil.
